Breath Awareness

The way we breathe in response to pain, pleasure, and stress can make a huge difference in our lives.

  • 20 000 times a day

Breathing is so automatic that we may not be aware of how we are breathing. Many of us breathe in ways that weaken our parasympathetic system, which helps us feel calm and safe.

  • Shallow breathing

Stress and trauma causes our bodies to constrict, so we end up breathing from our chest. Shallow breathing warns our sympathetic nervous system to stay alert, there may be danger.

  • Mind + Body

The breath can be a bridge to get us out of our heads, and to be more in contact with our bodily sensations, and deeper emotions. Focusing on each inhale and exhale helps ground us in the present moment.

Learn to breathe slowly and deeply.

Once we are familiar with your breathing habits, I can support you with conscious breathing. You will learn to guide your breath by changing its depth and speed, and directing it into certain parts of the body. We can assess which breathing techniques will be beneficial to you, so that you can use the breath to shift from reactive states to creative responses.

Breath awareness is nervous system support that is meant to be integrated as a sustainable practice. It is not breathwork which is typically an intense breakthrough experience.

I’m happy to incorporate breath awareness into your therapy sessions as part of our work together.
